BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball fell in a five-set battle against the Wichita State Shockers, 3-2 (25-19, 25-20, 14-25, 23-25, 14-16), closing out a three-game road stretch on Sunday inside Charles Koch Arena.
The Owls fall to 10-8 overall and 2-4 in AAC play, while Wichita State moves to 12-5 on the season and 4-1 in league play.
The Owls opened the match on a 5-1 run. Wichita State battled back to cut the Owls lead to just one at 14-13. However,
Victoria Hensley and
Kaila Ru combined for the block to give the Owls a two-point advantage at the opening media timeout, 15-13. Wichita State called a timeout with a 21-16 Florida Atlantic lead, but the Owls outscored the Shockers 4-3 to win the opening frame 25-19.
Florida Atlantic and Wichita State traded 3-0 runs to open the second, 3-3. After an 8-5 Wichita State lead, the Owls locked in to produce a 5-1 run and take their first lead of the set, 10-9. The Shockers responded, going on a 6-3 run to lead 15-13 at the second set media timeout. Wichita State tied things up at 19-19, however, the Owls dominated the remainder of the set, outscoring the Shockers 6-1 to win set two, 25-20, and take a 2-0 match lead.
Wichita State jumped out to an early 11-2 lead to open the third. Following a 13-3 Wichita State lead, the Owls battled back to cut the deficit to nine, 19-8, calling their second timeout of the set. But the Owls just couldn't cut into the Shockers' lead as Wichita State eventually took set three, 25-14.
The Owls opened the fourth set strong, jumping out to a 10-4 lead to open the set. However, the Shockers answered back, going on a 5-1 run to cut the Owls' deficit to two, 11-9. Florida Atlantic outscored Wichita State 7-4, sparking a Shocker timeout with the Owls leading by five, 18-13. The Owls held a 23-21 advantage at the end of set four, but the Shockers scored four unanswered to close out the set, 25-23, evening the match at two, 2-2.
Florida Atlantic led 8-7 in set five at the side swap. Wichita State tied the set at 8-8, but a Shocker service error and a block from
Kayla Richardson and Ru put the Owls in front by two, 10-8. The Owls maintained a one-point advantage with a 12-11 lead, but Wichita State outscored the Owls 5-2 to close out the match and take the five-set win, 3-2.
- Valeria Rosado had one of the best performances of 2024 so far, registering a match and season-high 18 kills and 18 digs, hitting .300 against the Shockers.
- Rosado's 18-kill, 18-dig performance marked her eighth double-double of the season.
- Katelynn Robine also tied for a match and season-high 18 kills.
- Victoria Hensley dished out a team-best 52 assists, to go along with 10 digs, marking her sixth double-double of the season.
- Isabelle Northam and Olivia Hart also registered double-figure digs, tallying 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
- Kaila Ru led the Owls in blocks in the match, recording five, while Robine finished second on the team with three blocks.
The Owls return to Paradise next weekend as they get ready to host Rice on Friday, Oct. 18, and South Florida on Sunday, Oct. 20.
