CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Florida Atlantic baseball dropped the series finale 12-4 against Charlotte on Sunday afternoon, ending a five-game winning streak.
Â
The Owls scored first for the first time in the series though they did it without a hit in the opening inning. Two walks, a wild pitch, and an RBI groundout by
Dylan Goldstein made it 1-0.
Â
Charlotte came back with five runs in the second, all of which scored with two outs. A grand slam off the bat of Jake Cunningham was the crushing blow. After two more runs in third and four in the fifth, the Owls hopes of a sweep were dashed.
Â
Andrew Hernandez homered in the eighth (his first as an Owl) and
Spencer Rich blasted a solo shot in the ninth but that's where the Owls' comeback chances ended.
Â
- 10 of Charlotte's 12 runs were scored with two outs.
- The Owls used six pitchers, but none pitched more than two innings.
- After recording the first five outs of the game with no issue, Nicholas Del Prado was charged with six runs in two innings.
- Evan Waterbor followed with two-thirds of an inning and one run against.
- Hunter Cooley recorded the last out of the third and eventually pitched into the fifth. He conceded four runs on five hits.
- Brandon Smith pitched a clean sixth and sixth inning before turning it over to Dawson Ball.
- Ball and Braden Ostrander finished off the last two inning.
- The Owls' offense finished with five hits, two of which came from Armando Albert.
- Nolan Schanuel walked twice to extend his reached-base steak to 42 games. Â
The Owls visit Fort Myers on Tuesday for the third of four in the season series against Florida Gulf Coast.
