BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – On Saturday, April 22, Western Kentucky took both games of the doubleheader from the Florida Atlantic University softball team. The Owls and Lady Toppers will play game three of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. WKU took game one, 3-2, before taking a pitcher's duel 1-0 in the last game.
GAME ONE
The Lady Toppers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Owls countered with a
Sommer Baker RBI double to center.
Gabby Sacco, the Owls' starting pitcher and ace, shut down the Lady Toppers for two innings, but WKU got another on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the third,
Olivia Peterson tied the game with her team-leading fifth home run of the season. The Owls mounted a rally in the seventh, but unfortunately lined into a game-ending double play. Sacco took the tough loss to drop her record to 17-4, which still leads C-USA. Sacco was relived in the fifth inning by
Ainsley Lambert.
GAME TWO
Lynn Gardner was dealing in game two, shutting out the Lady Toppers until the sixth inning. WKU finally struck with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth. The Owls threatened in the top of the third inning, when
Riley Olson continued to swing a hot bat with a leadoff double. Olson stole third when Peterson worked a walk, but the Lady Toppers thwarted the scoring threat with a fly out.
In the seventh inning,
Cammeo Presutti led off with a base hit up the middle. Peterson worked another walk, her third of the game, to set up runners on first and second. WKU ended the game by getting the Owls to ground out and pop up to secure their 1-0 win.
Presutti, Olson,
Jesiana Mora,
Riley Ennis and pinch hitter
Maya Amm all collected hits for the Owls in the second game.
