FORT MYERS, Fla. – A 6-6 tie was broken with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to end the Florida Atlantic University softball team's efforts for a Sunday tournament win over FGCU, falling 10-6.

BEGINNING

The Owls came out of the gates with hot bats tallying five hits, three runs and a walk, and forcing a pitching change before the first FGCU out was recorded. FAU would see the host Eagles score two in the bottom of the second to pull within one at 3-2 FAU.

MIDDLE

The Owls would see FGCU take the lead off a four-run fourth giving the Eagles a 6-3 lead. Olivia Peterson was part of a two-run FAU fifth, hitting a solo homer to center. Zoey Jones added a double and scored on a Riley Ennis single to pull the Owls within one at 6-5. The sixth saw Sara Berthiaume hit a two-out single up the middle, move to second on a wild pitch, and score on a Peterson single to center. Pitcher Lynn Gardner held off the threat in the bottom of the sixth sending the two teams to the seventh inning tied up at six.

END

The two teams moved to the bottom of the seventh tied at 6-6. With one out, FGCU got its first baserunner on with a slow-rolling single to second. Their next was a bunt that was held fair by the third-base chalk and the third was a single up the middle, advancing everyone to set up the theatrics of a game-winning grand slam.

NOTES/NOTABLES

Peterson was 3-for-4 with three RBI, a double, and a home run
Jesiana Mora, Sara Berthiaume, and Zoey Jones went 2-for-4 on the day, including a double for Jones and a triple for Berthiaume
Summer Clark started the game for the Owls, but was relieved by Ainsley Lambert in the second. Lambert threw 2.2 before giving way to Gardner who threw the final 2.2 and took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year

NEXT UP

The Owls will play host to the first Joan Joyce Classic featuring Boston College, North Carolina, Villanova, and Wisconsin scheduled for Feb. 23-26 in Boca Raton.
