MACON, Ga. – Florida Atlantic women's basketball (0-0, 0-0 AAC) is set to open up its 2023-24 campaign on Thursday evening as the Owls head to Macon, Georgia to face off against the Mercer Bears (0-1, 0-0 SoCon). First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. inside Hawkins Arena and on ESPN+.
A LOOK AT THE OWLS
- Head Coach Jennifer Sullivan enters her third year leading the Owls in 2023-24.
- The Owls return eight from the 2022-23 squad, including five starters from a season ago, while also adding six new faces for the new season, highlighted by three transfers and three true freshmen.
- The Owls' returners are highlighted by CUSA Freshman of the Year, CUSA All-Conference Second Team, CUSA All-Defensive Team, and CUSA All-Freshman Team honoree, Aniya Hubbard.
- Hubbard led the Owls and ranked eighth in Conference USA, averaging 14.5 points per game. She also led CUSA in steals during the 2022-23 season, averaging an incredible 2.5 steals per game. Hubbard is also the Owls' returning assists leader, dishing out a team-best 2.6 assists per game in 2022-23.
- Janeta Rozentale is the Owls' returning rebounding leader, averaging 6.1 rebounds per game last season. Rozentale also scored 8.4 points per game, collecting a team-leading four double-doubles.
- Hubbard and Rozentale are the Owls' returning blocking leaders, tying for a team-leading 17 blocks each a season ago.
- Alexa Zaph is the Owls' leading returning 3-point shooter and led the team in free throw percentage during the 2022-23 season. Zaph knocked down 28 3-pointers and shot an impressive .906 at the charity stripe.
- Three Owls are within striking distance of scoring 1,000 career points.
- Rose Caverly sits just 13 points away from breaking the career milestone with 987 career points.
- Alexa Zaph is the second closest Owl to 1,000 career points, sitting at 851 career points and needing just 149 to break the milestone.
- Janeta Rozentale has scored 703 career points and needs 297 to surpass 1,000.
- Aniya Hubbard and Devyn Scott are the closest Owls to 500 career points.
- Hubbard is just 65 points away from breaking 500 career points, while Scott sits 103 points away from hitting 500 with 397 career points.
- Rose Caverly is also approaching 500 career rebounds and assists, opening the 2023-24 campaign with 465 rebounds and 466 assists.
A LOOK AT MERCER
- The Bears enter their 14th season under head coach Susie Gardner in 2023-24.
- Mercer has a fresh look in 2023-24, having just five of the 12 players returning from the 2022-23 squad.
- Out of the seven newcomers, six transferred in, while adding just one true freshman.
- The Bears' Enjulina Gonzalez was named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference Team heading into the 2023-24 season.
- Mercer enters Thursday's contest 0-1 after having opened their season on Monday, falling 70-64 against the Owls' previous CUSA foes WKU.
- Stacie Jones, Mackenzie Johnson, and Briana Peguero led the Bears against the Hilltoppers, scoring 15 points each. Jones also led the Bears on the glass, posting an impressive 16 rebounds to go along with her team-leading 15 points.
- Aspen Johnson also tallied a double-double for the Bears, turning in 11 points and 10 rebounds.
- Peguero led the Bears in steals and assists, recording four and three, respectively.
- The Bears earned a first-place vote and were picked to finish third out of eight in the Southern Conference coaches poll this season. The SoCon media poll saw the Bears picked to finish fourth in the league.
GLANCING BACK TO LAST SEASON
- Mercer finished the 2022-23 season with a 12-16 overall record and a 8-6 mark in SoCon play.
- The Bears averaged 64.8 points per game and allowed 65.3, committing 14.7 turnovers per contest, shooting .431 from the field and were outrebounded 33.9 to 35.8.
- Mercer outshot its opponents last season, outshooting their opponents .431 to .403 from the field and .381 to .310 from beyond the arc.
- Mercer leads the all-time series against Florida Atlantic, 22-14, including a 13-2 record for contests played in Macon. The Bears have won the last three contests between the two programs, including a 66-55 win in the last meeting on Nov. 12, 2017, in Boca Raton.
- The Owls will continue their season-opening road trip as they head to Jacksonville, Florida on Monday, Nov. 13 to take on the UNF Ospreys. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside UNF Arena.
