Former Owl Murphy Named Brewers' New Manager

MILWAUKEE -- Former Florida Atlantic pitcher/utility man Pat Murphy has been named the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, the club announced on Wednesday. Murphy, a bench coach for the club since 2015, was promoted after Craig Counsell departed for the Chicago Cubs.Â
Murphy played two seasons for the Owls in 1981-82. He was named as the team's Pitcher MVP in '82 after racking up a 2.66 ERA. He tossed 11 complete games in his FAU career (fourth-most all-time). Murphy was inducted into the FAU Baseball Ring of Honor in 2008.Â
After spending time in the Giants and Padres organizations, he began his coaching career in 1983 at Maryville College. He would eventually find his way to Notre Dame in 1988Â where he coached Counsell, his Brewers predecessor. After seven years in South Bend, Murphy took over at Arizona State and was named National Coach of the Year in 1998 after leading the Sun Devils to the National Championship game.Â
From there, Murphy returned to the professional ranks and eventually reconnected with Counsell as a bench coach. The Brewers are the reigning NL Central Champions with a roster featuring several former all-stars including Corbin Burnes and Christian Yelich.Â
