BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball (14-11, 6-6 AAC) came up short on Sunday, falling in straight-sets against the UTSA Roadrunners (13-11, 6-7 AAC) inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
Katelynn Robine led the Owls against the Roadrunners, hitting for a phenomenal .438, and turning in nine kills in the match to go along with two digs.
Lauryn Green tallied a team second-best seven kills, while leading the Owls in blocks with three and recording a pair of digs.
Victoria Hensley dished out 28 assists and
Isabelle Northam tallied eight digs.
After UTSA took the opening point, the Owls went on a 6-2 run to double up the Roadrunners early. However, UTSA responded with six unanswered to take back the lead at 9-6. The Owls battled to close the deficit to two at 13-11 after a kill from Robine, however the Roadrunners went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead back out to seven, 18-11. The Owls looked to battle back over the remainder of the set, mounting an 11-6 to close the gap back to just two at 24-22, but a Florida Atlantic attack error closed out the set as UTSA claimed the opening frame, 25-22.
After a 9-9 stalemate to open the second, Florida Atlantic scored four unanswered to hold a 12-9 advantage after a pair of Roadrunner errors. The Owls maintained the lead through 14-13, following an
Arianna Beckham kill, however the Roadrunners retook the lead after a 4-0 run to hold a 17-14 advantage. UTSA led 23-19 late in the set before a 4-1 Florida Atlantic run, capped off by a kill from Green, brought the Owls back within one at 24-23, but UTSA closed the set with a kill to win 25-23 and take a 2-0 advantage.
The Owls opened the third to a 6-5 lead after kills from Green and Cornelio, however UTSA scored five unanswered to retake the lead 10-6. The Owls closed back within two at 11-9 following a kill from
Alicia Hearn, but that was as close as the Owls would get. UTSA produced a 14-5 run to close out the set as the Roadrunners took the third 25-14 and closed out the straight-set match, 3-0.
The Owls remain in Paradise next weekend as they host the Memphis Tigers for a pair of matches on Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4 inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
