BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic women's basketball (11-6, 4-4 C-USA) will close out its three-game homestand on Saturday, hosting the UTEP Miners (12-5, 5-3 C-USA) for a 2 p.m. tipoff inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
The Owls enter Saturday's contest 11-6 overall and 4-4 in C-USA play and are just coming off an 81-66 win against the UTSA Roadrunners, marking the largest margin of victory against a C-USA opponent in the Coach Sully era. The Owls are in their second year under head coach
Jennifer Sullivan, who has led the Owls to a 16-31 record over her two-year career in Boca Raton.
The Owls are led by
Aniya Hubbard, who is averaging a team-best 13.7 points per game. Hubbard is averaging 47 percent from the field, which ranks third in C-USA. Hubbard also paces the Owls in assists and steals, recording 2.5 per contest each. On the boards, Hubbard ranks third on the team, pulling down 4.9 rebounds per contest.
Janeta Rozentale and
Alexa Zaph round out the Owls top three scorers, averaging 8.8 points per contest each this season. Rozentale leads FAU on the glass, averaging 6.0 rebounds per game, as well as registering a team-best 0.8 blocks per contest this season.
In C-USA, the Owls lead the league in 3-point percentage defense (.279), second in rebounding margin (4.6) and rebounds per game (40.2), third in defensive rebounds per game (26.8), fourth in scoring defense (62.6), winning percentage (.647), turnover margin (0.18), field goal percentage defense (.394), offensive rebounds per game (13.5), steals per game 8.6), and fewest fouls per game (17.2), and fifth in turnovers forced per game (17.8) and free throw attempts per game (20.4).
UTEP enters Saturday's contest at 12-5 and 5-3 in C-USA play. The Miners are just coming off a tightly contested 72-70 loss against FIU. UTEP is in its sixth season under head coach Kevin Baker, who has amassed an 85-78 record over his six seasons in El Paso and boasts a 206-108 career record over his 11 years as a head coach.
The Miners are led by N'Yah Boyd and Jazion Jackson, who're averaging 12.3 and 11.1 points per contest respectively so far this season. Boyd also leads the Miners in assists, dishing out 2.7 per contest, while Jackson leads UTEP in steals, collecting 2.1 per contest this season. On the boards, the Miners are led by Adhel Tac in rebounds, averaging 6.3 boards per contest, and Elina Arike, who has notched 0.6 blocks per game this season.
As a team, UTEP ranks second in C-USA in turnover margin (4.9), fewest turnovers per game (13.9), offensive rebounds per game (13.9), and free throw attempts per game (22.3), third in winning percentage (.706), scoring defense (61.9), turnovers forced per game (18.8), free throws made per game (15.4), and fewest fouls per game (17.1), fourth in assist/turnover ratio (0.89), and fifth in scoring margin (5.1) and 3-point percentage (.306).
UTEP leads the all-time series between the Owls and the Miners, 10-5, although the Owls and Miners remain even 3-3 in contests played in Boca Raton. The Owls and Miners have evenly split the last four matches between the two programs, 2-2, with the Owls earning a 54-52 win in the last meeting between the two programs on Jan. 27, 2022, in Boca Raton.
The Owls head back out on the road next week as they travel to the Volunteer State to take on the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Thursday, Jan. 26 for a 7 p.m. tipoff inside the Murphy Center.
