BOCA RATON, Fla. – For the first time in 2022, the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team will hit the road as they head north on I-95 to compete in the Dolphin Classic hosted by Jacksonville on Sept. 9 & 10.
The Owls (5-1) will open play on Friday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. as they take on Idaho, before playing Tarleton State at 4 p.m. FAU will then close out play in the Dolphin Classic on Saturday, Sept. 10 as the Owls take on tournament host Jacksonville for a 2 p.m. first serve.
- FAU enters this weekend's Dolphin Classic with a 5-1 record and is currently on a three-game winning streak.
- The Owls are currently riding a three-game winning streak, within which FAU earned a pair of sweeps over Arkansas Pine Bluff and Alcorn, as well as earning an impressive four-set victory over previously unbeaten Stetson in the Owls' Owls Paradise Classic finale.
- Klara Zanovicka has a dominant weekend for the Owls, leading the team hitting .397 with 39 kills (3.90 per set) to earn an Owls Paradise Classic MVP nod. Noelle Stephens also had an impressive weekend for FAU, dishing out a team-best 98 assists (9.8 assists per set), while also posting a phenomenal .667 hitting percentage with nine kills and just one error on 12 attempts to earn All-Tournament honors.
- In 2022, Katelynn Robine has hit a team-leading .400, while Valeria Rosado leads the Owls in kills, recording a team-best 68.
- Stephens leads FAU in assists this season, posting 196 assists, averaging 10.32 per set.
- Defensively, the Owls are led by Camryn Vogler on the backline with a team-leading 54 digs (2.84 per set), while Lauryn Green and Zarnovicka lead FAU at the net, recording 12 and 11 blocks each, respectively. Green has posted a team-leading five solo blocks this season.
- The Owls swept the Owls Paradise Classic claiming the tournament title after a trio of impressive matches, including sweeps over Arkansas Pine Bluff and Alcorn, as well as earning a statement four-set win over previously unbeaten Stetson to claim the Owls Paradise Classic championship.
- Idaho is coached by Chris Gonzalez, who has led the Vandals to a tough 0-6 start to the 2022 season in his first season as head coach.
- Idaho is just coming off an 0-3 weekend at the GCU Classic, in which the Vandals fell in a trio of sweeps against Grand Canyon, Wyoming, and Santa Clara.
- The Vandals are led by Taryn Vrieling and Delaney Nicole who have recorded a a team-best 52 kills (2.74 per set) and 48 kills (2.82 per set) each, respectively.
- Setter Kate Doorn leads Idaho in assists this season, dishing out a team-best 101 and averaging 5.61 per set.
- Defensively, the Vandals are led by Aine Doty with a team-high 69 digs (3.45 per set) and, as well as at the net by Vrieling and Madison Wilson who lead the Vandals in blocks with 10 each, including a team-best four solo blocks from Vrieling.
- Jacksonville is coached by Maggie Couture, who leads the Dolphins in her third season as head coach.
- Coach Couture has led the Dolphins to a 9-42 overall record during her time in Jacksonville.
- The Dolphins enter this weekend's tournament with a 2-4 record in 2022 and is just coming off the Dolphins Jacksonville Invitational that saw the Dolphins go 2-1 with a five-set win over Chattanooga, a sweep of Georgia State, and falling in a four-set battle with Presbyterian.
- Haley Hart leads the Dolphins offensively, hitting .394 with 69 kills (3.29 per set).
- Rebecca Rocassin leads Jacksonville with a team-best 198 assists, averaging 9.43 per set
- Kariana Ayala-Drew leads the Dolphins with a team-high 52 digs (4.73 per set), while Lyric Love and Haley Hart have posted 23 and 20 blocks each, respectively. Love leads the Dolphins with six solo blocks.
- Tarleton is coached by Mary Schindler, who leads the Texans in her 18th season as head coach.
- Coach Schindler has led the Texans to a 352-197 overall record during her time in Stephenville.
- The Texans are 7-1 so far in 2022 and are currently on a four-game winning streak, including a four-set midweek victory against Incarnate Word after hosting the Dr. Pam Littleton Classic, which saw Tarleton go 3-0 with a pair of four-set victories over Southeastern Louisiana and Prairie View A&M, as well as a sweep of Tennessee State.
- Offensively, Tarleton is led by Grayson Schirpik, Ailie Hair, and Breanna McDonough who have posted 86 (3.07 per set), 69 (2.46 per set), and 68 kills (2.43 per set), respectively, while Hair leads the Texans with a team-best .492 hitting percentage.
- Megan Hodges and Melina Maldonado have led the Texans in assists, dishing out 168 (6 per set) and 134 assists (4.79 per set), respectively.
- Ana Costas leads the Texans with 112 digs (4 per set), while Hair has posted a team-best 30 blocks, including a team-leading eight solo blocks.
The Owls will remain on the road as they head to Fort Myers next weekend to compete in the FGCU Invitational on Sept. 16 & 17 at Alico Arena.
