BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team opened the 2022 season on Sunday night with a 2-2 draw against Lynn University.
The first half played out scoreless, but it wasn't without chances for both sides. The Owls had three shots in the opening 15 minutes but were unable to cash in.
The breakthrough would finally come in the 53rd minute. Freshman forward
Fritz Kleiner found space down the right side. The German cut to the middle and found an open
Victor Claudel. Claudel fired home from just outside the six-yard box to put the Owls in front 1-0.
The home side would double the advantage in the 62nd minute. Right back
Tom Abrahamsson threaded a perfect through ball to send
Pepo Bravo in alone. Lynn GK Patrick Nettekoven had no choice but to impede Bravo as he attempted to sidestep the keeper. Claudel stepped forward and converted the resulting penalty for his second goal of the night. The Owls had a commanding 2-0 lead with just under a half hour remaining.
The game would change again, however, less than 30 seconds later. Bravo, already on a yellow card, was involved in a collision and the official put the sophomore in the book for a second time. The red card meant the Owls would have to play on with 10 men.
Now playing a man up, Lynn took advantage. They broke the shutout in the 72nd minute and then tied it in the 85th. Four second half saves from FAU GK
Neil Strauber preserved the 2-2 draw.
Head men's soccer coach Joey Worthen
"A lot of positives tonight. A lot of guys got involved, several got their first minutes at FAU. We played really well at times. The red card changed the game and credit to Lynn. They pushed us. Our guys battled but that's a lot of work when you're a man down."
The Owls' three-game homestand to start the season continues Wednesday when Stetson comes to town. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 pm.
