MONTGOMERY CITY, Texas – The Florida Atlantic University men's golf team won the team title and junior
Alex Maguire won the individual title at the Bayou City Collegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The team victory is the Owls' first under Head Coach
Mark Leon and first in a full-field event since 2015.
Head Coach Mark Leon on the team victory
"These guys have been working so hard all spring, and it's been amazing to watch them grow as a group. Their development has been nothing short of impressive, and I'm thrilled they were able to get a win in our regular season finale."
Leon on the play of Maguire
"I'm also so proud of Alex for getting his first college win. Alex has been playing some of the best golf I've ever seen at home, and he's been frustrated that it hasn't shown up on the road. He stayed the course and trusted himself. It couldn't happen to a more deserving athlete."
- After holding the overnight lead, Maguire posted a final round 74 (+2) and found himself in a playoff with New Mexico State's Garrison Smith
- Both players parred the first extra hole. Maguire's par on the second playoff hole was good enough as Smith made bogey
- Jake Hibbert's final round 68 was the lowest in the field on Tuesday
- Hibbert circled three birdies and added an eagle-3 at the par-five 10th to jump 33 spots into a tie for 11th
- Max Sturdza recorded his third straight Top 25 after a final round 76 (+4). He finished tied for 22nd
- Guilherme Grinberg and Juan Delgado were neck and neck for all three rounds
- Grinberg's final round 72 included one birdie, one bogey, and 16 pars. He tied for 32nd.
- Juan Delgado battled through a bout with food poisoning and closed with 75 to tie for 37th at +8
The Owls will look to keep the momentum going at the Conference USA championship beginning April 25 in Texarkana, Ark.
