BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team earned a series finale victory over UTSA on Sunday. The Owls cranked out four home runs and
Jacob Josey provided another stellar extended relief outing in the 8-4 win.
Head Coach John McCormack
"Offensively we did what we needed to do. The Goldstein home run really helped, and Nick Toney comes up with a couple of big hits too. He hasn't had a whole lot of playing time recently so I'm really proud of him. Josey kind of bailed us out again. He did the same thing last Sunday. He was really good. He threw strikes. The one thing he does is he competes, and it was great to see."
After
Steven Loden and
Tyler Kelder singled with one out in the second,
Dylan Goldstein took a 3-2 pitch over the right center field wall to open the scoring. UTSA responded with a run in the top of the third and three more in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
FAU starter
Tyler Burnham found himself in a jam in the fourth and, for the second consecutive Sunday, he was relieved by
Jacob Josey. Josey limited the damage to just one run and the Owls' offense took over from there.
Nicholas Toney's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth gave FAU the lead back and they would keep it for the rest of the day. Goldstein doubled home Kelder in the sixth and
Jackson Ross launched a two-run homer to left center in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Josey retired 11 straight at one point. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and then set down the Roadrunners in order in the ninth.
- Burnham allowed three runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out two
- Josey faced 21 batters and threw 95 pitches. He conceded just three hits and one run in six innings
- The Owls finished with 13 hits including four home runs and three doubles
- Goldstein finished 3-for-4 with four RBI
- Kelder doubled, singled, and scored three runs
- Toney went 2-for-3 and connected for his first home run of the season
- All nine Owls hitters reached base at least once and eight of the nine recorded a hit
The Owls head back on the road for the next four games beginning with a trip to UCF on Tuesday. C-USA play continues in Houston next weekend against Rice.
