BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University women's tennis (4-6) downed host University of North Florida (4-6) 5-2, on Saturday afternoon. The win is the second consecutive win over the Osprey in as many years and evens the all-time record between the two at 4-4.
The match lasted nearly three hours and saw host UNF earn the doubles point. Down 1-0, the individuals went to work in their matches.
FAU freshman
Millie-Mae Matthews captured court six 6-2, 6-2 to even the score. Fellow freshmen
Lexi Silna and
Amber McGinnis followed, also in straight sets to put the Owls up 3-1. Then, junior
Katerina Filip won 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Owls. UNF closed out the day with a win on court one moments before FAU's
Greta Schieroni captured court three 6-4, 6-2 for the matches' 5-2 final.
"I'm extremely proud of the way the team competed today," said
Ricardo Gonzalez, FAU's director of tennis. "We have been working a lot on our team culture and today was a big step in the right direction. We played together as one unit. We played for each other, and we played with a lot of fight and will to win. I am pleased with our performance today. Tomorrow, we have another tough challenge so we will quickly shift our focus and be ready for another battle."
