Owls secure five-set win at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team (11-6, 1-4 C-USA) earned its first Conference USA contest of the season on Friday, earning a five-set battle against the Charlotte 49ers at Halton Arena.
The Owls dominated the opening frame. After battling to a 12-8 FAU lead to open the contest. The Owls flexed their muscles as they more than doubled the 49ers output the rest of the set, outscoring the 49ers 13-6 to take the opening set by 11, 25-14, and the early lead, 1-0.
FAU opened the second set on a 5-3 run, but Charlotte battled back to retake the lead 6-5, but a 4-0 run from the Owls to give FAU a three-point advantage, 9-6, after a kill and service ace from Valeria Rosado. FAU maintained its three-point lead through 16-13, before going on a 9-6 run over the remainder of the set, which was capped off by senior Lauryn Green's 500th career kill, to win 25-19 and put the Owls up 2-0.
Charlotte took the early lead in the third, opening the frame on a 5-1 run. The Owls battled back to even the set at 7-7 off another Green kill. The Owls took their largest lead of the set at 15-10, however Charlotte responded with eight unanswered points to retake the lead 18-15. FAU attempted to rally but the 49ers held the Owls off as they eventually took the 25-22 win to force a fourth set, 2-1.
Much like the third set, the 49ers started off quick taking a 4-0 lead. The Owls battled back on a 7-3 run to even things at 7-7. Following a 9-9 tie, Charlotte produced a 5-1 run to lead 14-10. The Owls kept things within four at 20-16, but it just wasn't enough as Charlotte would close the set on a 5-2 run to take the fourth 25-18 and force a decisive fifth set, 2-2.
FAU took a commanding lead to start the fifth, scoring six unanswered, 6-0. The Owls maintained a four-point advantage after a kill from Alicia Hearn kept FAU up 8-4 as the teams switched sides. Charlotte rallied off a 7-3 run to cut the FAU lead down to one, 13-12, however the Owls locked in as Katelynn Robine scored back-to-back kills to close the set 15-12 and give the Owls the 3-2 win.
The Owls return to FAU Arena on Sunday as they host the UAB Blazers for FAU's Dig Pink game, honoring coach Capri Grotowski. First serve is set for noon.
