Owls in the Pros 2022 Season in Review

BOCA RATON, Fla. – 13 former Florida Atlantic baseball owls spent time in professional organizations in the 2022 season. Here's a recap of how they fared:

Austin Gomber – Colorado Rockies: In his second full season with the Rockies, Gomber appeared in 33 games on the mound with 17 starts. He posted a 5-7 W/L record and a 5.56 ERA over 124.2 innings.
R.J. Alvarez – Syracuse Mets (New York Mets Triple-A): Alvarez pitched in 40 games as a reliever for the Mets finishing with a 4.53 ERA. The native of West Palm Beach was briefly recalled by the big club in August and made one appearance.
B.J. Murray – South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs High-A): After hitting .305 with Myrtle Beach in April and May, Murray earned a promotion to High-A in June. He continued to swing it well racking up five home runs and 28 RBI in 56 games.

Tyler Frank – Montgomery Biscuits (Tampa Bay Rays Double-A): Frank spent time at both Double-A and High-A this past season. Between the two, he hit .216 with two home runs and 26 RBI in 67 games. He found his stride in August, hitting .394 in 55 at-bats for the month.

Kyle Marman – Akron Rubberducks (Cleveland Guardians Double-A): Marman pitched in 42 games with a 5-2 record and a 4.41 ERA for Akron. A solid season at Double-A earned the Orlando native a late season promotion to Triple-A Columbus.

Jake Miednik – Modesto Nuts (Seattle Mariners Single-A): Miednik was on the move in 2022 pitching at three different levels of the Mariners minor league system after signing with the organization on June 2. He finished the season with 10 games and eight starts for Modesto in the California League. He also saw time in High-A and in the Arizona Complex League.

Pedro Pages – Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A): Pages played in 86 games combined between Triple and Double-A. He hit .227 with 10 home runs and 44 RBI. Perhaps most impressive was his defense behind the plate. Pages made just four errors in 639 chances and cut down 21 of 48 steal attempts. The Cardinals' 2019 sixth round pick will be in the mix for a spot with the big club in 2023 after the retirement of Hall of Fame catcher Yadier Molina.

Javi Rivera – Daytona Tortugas (Cincinnati Red Single-A): Rivera was impressive in 19 games with the Tortugas. He posted a 2.81 ERA in 73.2 innings. Rivera was lights-out in June with a 0.48 ERA in 18 innings earning him the Florida State League Pitcher of the Month award. He was rewarded with a promotion to High-A in August.

Mike Ruff – Hartford Yard Goats (Colorado Rockies Double-A): Ruff was solid in 16 games with Spokane in High-A and earned a call-up to Double-A Hartford in August. Between the two levels this season, he started 23 games with a 4.92 ERA across 113 innings. Â

Matt Sparling – Lake Elsinore Storm (San Diego Padres Single-A): Sparling made 14 appearances at the Single-A level and is now pitching for the Padres Arizona Complex League club.

Francisco Urbaez – Chattanooga Lookouts (Cincinnati Reds Double-A): Urbaez was a mainstay for the Lookouts before an injury ended his season in early July. Prior to that, he was hitting .280 with three home runs and 22 RBI in 46 games.

Cody Wilson – Wilmington Blue Rocks (Washington Nationals High-A): Wilson appeared in 25 games for Wilmington where he hit .271 with two home runs and 11 RBI. He finished the season on a tear going 8-19 in six games in September.

David McKay – Las Vegas Aviators (Oakland A's Triple-A): McKay pitched in the majors for the Yankees, Rays, and A's. He will enter 2023 as a free agent.

Eric Rivera – Winnipeg Goldeyes (Independent League): Though he wasn't a part of a major league organization, Rivera received plenty of at-bats in the American Associations between Winnipeg and Chicago. The 2019 draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays racked up 35 RBI and hit .262 in 87 games.Â
Florida Atlantic baseball held its annual scout day for this season on October 6. 40 scouts associated with professional teams were in attendance.Â
