BOCA RATON (FAUSports.com) --Â The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team will open the home portion of its Conference USA schedule Monday afternoon looking to bounce back from a pair of losses as Charlotte visits The Burrow. The Owls are coming off a 1-2 three-game road swing, with losses to MTSU and UAB last week.
Monday's game is slated for a 4 p.m. ET tipoff. The game will be heard in the South Florida area on Fox Sports 640 AM and can be viewed on CUSA TV. The contest was originally scheduled for Dec. 30, but was postponed due to Covid-19 protocols.
While the Owls are coming off a tough week, the 49ers have won four in a row, including a sweep of UTSA and UTEP at home last week.
FAU and Charlotte split a pair of contests on Abessinio Court last season. The Owls won the first matchup on Jan. 22 in a 66-53 overtime triumph. Charlotte responded to split the series with a 74-71 win on Jan. 23.
The Owls will conclude a stretch of three games in five days when Charlotte visits The Burrow on Monday. The contest vs. the 49ers is the first of three straight at home, with Western Kentucky and Marshall coming to Boca Raton on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Cleaning the Glass
Offensive rebounding has been a point of emphasis for the Owls the last two seasons, and the message has been received. FAU averaged 12.5 offensive boards per game, which ranked No. 1 in C-USA and No. 29 in the nation last year. Through 16 games this season, FAU is No. 3 in CUSA and No. 73 in the nation at 11.7 offensive rebounds per game.
FAU also ended last year No. 1 in C-USA and No. 13 in the nation in rebounding margin (+7.8). The Owls are currently No. 1 in CUSA and No. 64 in the nation at +5.3. In all but three games this year, FAU has tied or outrebounded the opposition. FAU has owned the edge by 10 or more five times, with a high of +17 (at UNM).
Martin Making a Mark
Alijah Martin has stepped up in a big way during his second year as an Owl. After averaging 4.2 points per game in his first season, the second-year freshman is putting up 13.3 points per contest so far this season.
Martin scored a game-high 16 points at UAB Satruday, giving him six straight games in double-figure scoring. He has reached double digits in 12 of 16 games this year. He tallied 10+ points just 4 times in 21 games last year.
