BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University softball (7-20, 2-2 Conference USA) will play host to Charlotte (17-8 overall and 3-1 in C-USA play) this weekend for a four-game set, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
Series History
This will be the 23rd-26th meetings between the two schools with the Owls holding a 16-6 advantage. Last season's series was won by Charlotte, 2-1, and it was the last C-USA series FAU would get to play in a season shortened by COVID-19.
Last Week's Leaders
- Coming off a three-game series with FIU, the top two performers were Kaitlyn Cunningham and Lynn Gardner
- Cunningham, who is ranked No. 8 nationally with four triples, added another triple to bring her season total to five. The freshman continued her role as the Owls' starting centerfielder last weekend; however, she moved to the No. 2 spot in the order and mastered the role with a 6-for-10 plate performance. In the three-game series, she had two extra base hits, which included the aforementioned triple as well as a double. She also was credited with one RBI. More importantly, the freshman adapted to the role by putting the ball in play in each of her 10 at-bats and was successful six of those times.
- Gardner was called into action in each of the Owls' three games versus FIU, including once as a starter. In the game that she entered the circle first, Gardner picked up the 7-3 complete game win. Gardner scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs. In her first appearance she tossed 2.2 innings, allowed four hits and three runs, two of which were earned. In her final game of the weekend, she tossed four innings of relief, scattered seven hits and allowed four earned runs in the 7-4 loss. At the plate she was 2-for-8 with a run scored Â
National Leaders
- As a team, the Owls are ranked No. 7 nationally in doubles, averaging 0.59 per game, and in triples, averaging 0.37 per game
- Individually, freshman Cunningham is ranked No. 3 nationally with five triples, while sophomore Sara Berthiaume just outside the nation's top-20 at No. 21
