HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Florida Atlantic University softball fell in the opener of a four-game Conference USA set against Marshall, 1-0 on Friday.
The Owls (8-24, 3-6 C-USA) outhit the Thundering Herd (13-7, 2-3 C-USA), and junior hurler
Lynn Gardner tossed six scoreless innings, retiring five by strikeout, but it was a fateful third that was the decider.
"I thought Lynn pitched a good game today," said
Joan Joyce, FAU's head coach. "We just couldn't get a run across."
FAU threatened in the first inning and retired the side one-two-three in the bottom half of the first. It was a quiet second for both squads. Marshall scored in the third when their leadoff batter was hit by a pitch. A single followed and then two walks, the second of which plated the game's only run. Gardner would then hold Marshall to one hit through the final four innings but suffered the loss.
- The first four hitters in the Owls' lineup have been the workhorses thus far and Friday was no different. Sara Berthiaume, Kaitlyn Cunningham, Kaitlyn Burke and Maya Amm were 1-for-3 each
- Gardner pitched her team-leading 11th complete game while striking out five, two below her season high, and gave up just three hits and an earned run in the loss
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon. To follow the team socially, visit @fausoftball, or for the most up-to-date information go to
