ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team (4-4) suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 18 UCF (9-3) on Sunday, in a match played at the USTA National Training Center. While it was the fourth loss for the Owls, only one has come at the hands of an unranked team.
The Owls made the three-hour trip from Boca Raton to Orlando to play at one of the top facilities in the US. The match began with doubles where FAU surrendered the point, however, the team of
Radka Buzkova/
Katerina Filip captured court two with a 6-1 win. FAU then moved into singles play, seeing the first set on court two going to UCF's Rebeka Stolmer, ranked No. 42 over FAU's
Martina Kudelova. But Kudelova pushed her opponent to the limit in set one falling 7-6 (7-0), 6-2.
Louie McLelland also forced a set tiebreak on court five, but ultimately fell 6-0, 7-6 (8-6), and
May Kimhi had a similar fate on court six with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 loss.
"We are making strides and improving everyday," said
Caroline Wheelen, FAU's head coach. "The match today proves how good the team is ,but they need to believe they are. They need to have faith in their abilities and training plan."
