BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team will host a ceremony to honor longtime Florida umpire Matthew Dunbar on Sunday.
Dunbar, who is retiring from umpiring, has been a longtime contributor to the game of softball in the Florida area. For more than 20 years, he has served the Sunshine State Conference, Conference USA, Sun Belt, and the TACC as both an umpire and an assigner. Dunbar has represented those conferences in several NCAA postseason assignments.
For more than a decade, Dunbar has assisted Mike McDermott from the SSC in assigning umpires throughout the South

Florida area, including FAU games. Dunbar has always been the first in line to share his extensive knowledge of rules and umpire mechanics to those interested in improving their skills.
"Matt has worked all levels of this game, from rec ball, to NCAA Championships, to international championships, and the Women's Pro League," McDermott said. "He has serviced the game as an umpire, a mentor, an assigner, and a leader of various softball organizations during his stellar career. Matt was a steward of the game and will be missed by all who love this game, especially by me."
The presentation will begin at approximately 11:30 a.m., before the FAU scrimmage starts at noon.
