Owls Fall to FIU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team (8-5-2, 2-3-2 in Conference USA) played is final home match of the 2021 fall season on Saturday afternoon. The Owls dropped the contest to No. 17 FIU by a 4-0 decision. Eight FAU seniors were recognized prior to the match for Senior Day.
First Half
FIU scored its first goal at the 10th minute, as a long cross found Stephen Afrifa whose ball found the back of the net. FAU tried to respond on the counter with a shot by Vasilis Spinos, but the attempt was missed far to the right. FIU tacked onto its lead at the 32nd minute with another goal, as the Owls trailed 2-0. Trying to look for a response before the half, Davide Romeo delivered a great shot at the 38th minute, but the FIU keeper logged the save. Just before the half, FIU scored again to make the score 3-0, Panthers. FIU had the 7-3 shot advantage at the half.
Second Half
At the 52nd minute, Blake Dean delivered an incredible shot at the left part of the box, but the ball was high and hit the cross bar. Spinos was booked with a red card at the 57th minute, resulting in FIU to have an opportunity at a penalty kick. Neil Strauber delivered an unbelievable save at the right of the net to keep the score put. Throughout the remaining contest, FAU was forced to continue with 10 players. FIU scored its fourth goal at the 62nd minute to elevate the Panthers' lead to 4-0. FAU could not find a response, dropping the game, 4-0.
FAU will travel to top-ranked Kentucky for the team's regular season finale. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

- Dean led the Owls with three shots, two on goal
- Romeo registered two shots, both on target
- Strauber played all 90 minutes in the match with six saves. Opponents are now 0-2 on penalty kick tries thanks to Strauber
- Seniors Alonso Coello Camarero, Dean, Arturo Ernand, Kevian Ferraz, Ivan Mykhailenko, Edgardo Obregon, Jean Paul Rafols and Strauber were recognized prior to first touch for Senior Day
