BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team (9-7, 1-2 C-USA) lost their second match of the Conference USA season on Saturday, 3-0 to the Charlotte 49ers (8-7, 1-2 C-USA).
Faced with the difficult task of going up against a stout Charlotte defense, FAU's best hitters gave it their all during a tough afternoon at Halton Arena. The usual suspects like like Klara Zarnovicka and Lauryn Green each made their presence known, but it would not be enough to win the day for the Owls.Â
Set 1
The Owls found themsleves at a deficit to start the match, but Green took it upon herself to find ways to keep FAU in it with the great defense that has come to be expected from the junior transfer from Tulane. Her fierce attacks at the net led to a pair of kills in the set before Camryn Vogler's ace threatened to sneak the Owls back into contention, trailing 13-6. But, the Owls could not find answers in the backline and Charlotte went on to take set 1, 25-13.
Set 2
The second set brought a fresh scoresheet, and when Green and Christine Jarman each finished a kill to put the Owls up 2-1, it appeared as though the Owls would give Charlotte all they could handle as the teams settled in for a battle. Bck and forth they went until the Owls took a timeout trailing 10-7 to slow things down. From there, a quick run by Charlotte allowed them to stay in front, even as Green and Katelynn Robine kept pounding away on the frontline. Zarnovicka too kept fighting and seemed to find her stroke near the end of the set, which was eventually won by the 49ers, 25-17.
Set 3
The third and final set of the day was similar to the first set with the 49ers able to capitalize on FAU's miscues while the Owls fought to keep the match alive. The FAU defense played well in the final period, outblocking the 49ers 3 to 2. But Charlotte's high accuracy and relentless offense built an insurmountable lead and they took the third set 25-11, winning the match in three sets.
- English extended her double-digit assists streak to 16 matches
- Bartecka led the team in blocks (3) for the first time this season
- Green finished with a hitting pecentage above .350 for the fourth time in five matches.
- Jarman led the team in digs (7) for the second match in a row.
FAU will conclude the series against Charlotte tomorrow at Halton Arena. The match time has changed and is now scheduled for 1 p.m.
