Championship Flashback: Owls Move to 2-0 With Road Win
9/29/2020 1:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BOCA RATON, Fla. – A year and a week ago, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team kicked off Conference USA play with a victory, then would go on to finish out the 2019 non-conference schedule. A home win over Creighton was followed by a fruitless trip to Oklahoma, with a washout at Oral Roberts.
Â
From there – literally from Tulsa without coming back to Boca Raton – the women traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on UAB, on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019. This is the second of a series of eight features looking back at the path to the Owls' 2019 C-USA championship. For the original recap of this match, click HERE.
Â
Each team scored in the first half, and the Owls' game-winner came late, courtesy of a connection from Tiril Haga to Mary O'Hara to Madison Davenport, the first goal of the sophomore Davenport's career.
Â
Owls' Record: 2-0 in C-USA, 8-2-0 overall
Â
FAU Scoring
26:26 VELTA, Pernille (unassisted)
78:09 DAVENPORT, Madison (O'HARA, Mary;HAGA, Tiril)

Coach Baker Then (Full video)
"A lot of ups and downs in the game to be fair. Just a huge road win, especially after traveling all the way to Oklahoma on Thursday, not playing, and traveling all the way back here. Not (an) ideal travel situation, but a really important three points and really important road win to get to 2-0 in the conference."
Â
Coach Baker Reflects Back Now
"We'd gone halfway across the country to not play a game, and to come back a quarter of the country to play, I remember our training on Saturday was actually pretty good. And then, we started brightly in the game, but it was really, really warm that day in Birmingham.
Â
"We had some good looks in the second half, full credit to Madi Davenport, right time, right place, composed finish. A much-needed goal, because a couple more minutes, and now you're much closer to full time and possibly overtime, and you just never know. To get that first road win in conference was massive, and to get to a 2-0 start was great."
Â
Key Moment or Stretch
"Overall defensively, I think we were really good. And then, for someone to step up in that moment – which was the story of the year as it unfolded – in that individual moment, where there's just one goal that separates us, who was it? How does it happen? It happened late, we were going for it, and for Madi Davenport to get her first goal was wonderful."
Â
Key Player – Pernille Velta
"P's goal was a tremendous individual effort, and not only that, but also how we conducted our clock management, she was phenomenal. Being able to stick the ball in the corner, shield it, be smart and get us throw-ins, that senior savviness. She definitely played like the experienced player we needed her to be."
Â
Standings – Tied for 3rd, Three Points Back
