BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team returns six from a 2019 season that saw the Owls post an 8-3 mark prior to an abrupt ending caused by COVID. When the Owls returned to campus in August, freshman newcomer Marija Vicic joined the veteran squad. In January, one more piece to a puzzle that will reveal itself as a talented and experienced team will be aided with the addition of transfer Katerina Filip.
Filip, a native of Mechenice, Czech Republic, will come to FAU from Loyola Marymount University where she posted a 2-2 singles record as a true freshman, playing each of her four matches on court No. 4. Filip was also part of the No. 1 doubles team that tallied a 2-4 record.
"I chose FAU for many reasons, including the team spirit, the coaches' vision and the way the coaches work with the players, as well as the beautiful environment which provides great opportunities," said Filip. "I'm so excited to be part of the FAU team and to share the best moments in my college life with amazing coaches and teammates. I can't wait to make lots of unforgettable memories with the Owls!"
Filip began her college career after building a top 150 junior world player résumé.
"Katerina brings a wealth of international experience, maturity and a major work ethic, all of which fits into our already established culture," said Caroline Wheelen, FAU's head women's tennis coach. "She understands that she is here to do a job and is focused. A player like Katerina really appreciates the work of her coaches and the effort put into giving her the opportunity for success on the court, academically and in life."
The Owls' fall schedule is on hold at the moment, but the team will continue to work towards a return to dual match play in 2021. FAU is expected to be led by veterans Natalia Boltinskaya and Natalie Kallmunzerova, who was a perfect 10-0 when the season ended.
