BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University's women's tennis team (7-3) remained mentally focused despite weather and other delays to down Gonzaga (7-6), 5-0, on Tuesday.
Just minutes after FAU captured the doubles point, the clouds opened to sprinkles and then a heavy rain, sending the two teams to shelter. Two hours later, the match resumed under clear skies and bright sun with the Owls up 1-0. By early evening, FAU had rebounded from its hard- fought loss on Sunday for the 5-0 win.
Head Coach Caroline Wheelen
"The mental strength made the difference today," said head coach
Caroline Wheelen. "Gonzaga was a really tough team with major consistency as their strength. We have added meditation, visualization and Zen activities. The players are able to stay calm and let their opponents' self- destruct."
- The three doubles' courts were victorious, but the point was decided by courts three and one coming off first, and two following seconds later
- Martina Kudelova, playing position No. 2, finished her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to put the Owls up 2-0
- Natalie Kallmunzerova walked off her court with a 6-4, 6-1 win to move to 9-0 on the season. On Tuesday, she played No. 5, but has seen action on courts 4, 5 and 6
- May Kimhi found herself in a battle and completed her match 6-2, 7-5 at the same time as Louie McLelland, on court No. 6, ended her match with a 6-2, 6-2 score completing the Owls' win
- Radka Buzkova and Natalia Boltinskaya were clinched out
