Get to Know Tuesday: Alonso Coello Camarero

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team brings back 16 returners and adds 10 newcomers to the 2020-21 squad. Throughout the offseason, we will be getting to know an Owl each week leading up to the first spring game. Alonso Coello Camarero is the next Owl we will get to know this week.

Coello Camarero became the first Owl to earn Conference USA First Team honors since FAU joined the league in 2013. During his sophomore year, he started in all 14 games he appeared in, while finishing third on the team in minutes played (1,130). Coello Camarero was a key contributor on both sides of the ball, picking up from where he left off during his rookie year, where he received a nod to the C-USA All-Conference Third Team and All-Freshman Team.

Q: How did it feel to become FAUs first C-USA First Team selection?
A: It truly meant a lot to me, and it felt amazing. I see it as a recognition for my performance during last season, but also serves as a reminder of how I should perform in the next one. I do not take it for granted, and I know I have to keep working and getting better for my name to remain there next year.

Q: What are your biggest goals going into your third season?
A: As a team, our goal should always be making the conference tournament and once we get there, we will be in a good position to compete for the conference championship and qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Individually, I want to keep improving as a player and expanding my game and what I can offer to this team on and off the field. I want to establish myself as a top player not just inside our conference, but nationally.

Q: Why did you decide to come to the states to pursue your soccer and academic career? Why FAU specifically?
A: I wanted to be able to keep playing soccer at a high level while getting a degree. I chose FAU because it offers the whole package (athletics, academics, location, etc.)

Q: How was your quarantine experience?
A: It was tough. I was in Spain where quarantine was really strict. We could not leave our houses for two months. I tried to find a good routine with balancing the time spent in classes and working out as much as possible.

Q: How is it taking mostly (if not all) of your classes online?
A: It is different than what we are used to. You have to be able to organize yourself better and not procrastinate. Set yourself a time during the day for you to get done with any homework or study that you might have to do.

Q: What soccer player do you look up to or model your game after?
A: There are a few of them. I have always been a Steven Gerrad fan, not just because of his qualities as a player, but how great of a leader and role model he was on the field.

Q: What is your favorite sport to watch (other than your own)? Do you have a favorite team?
A: I love watching and playing basketball. While I do not have a favorite team, I usually want any team where Kevin Durant is to do well. He is something else to watch.

Q: Who is the funniest player on the team?
A: Emmanuel [Abolo Carré] is a professional comedian. He has a lot of energy, and never stops clowning around. I personally laugh a lot with Arturo [Ernand] and [Andres] Macias too. I have known them since I go here two and a half years ago and I have a great friendship with them.
