BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team is set to host the team's first two matches of the 2019 season this weekend, against Florida and Grand Canyon. The contests will both take place at FAU Soccer Stadium, on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Owls' 2018 in Review
The Owls (12-8-1, 8-1-1 C-USA last season) earned a share of last year's conference regular season title and advanced to the semifinal round of the league's postseason tournament. Only two starters departed from the championship-winning squad, defender Ebba Blomqvist and goalkeeper Jennifer Ocampo. Returning players, which include the team's nine other starters plus a handful of key and experienced reserves, bring back over 80 percent of the goals scored – 25 of 31 (80.6 percent) – and virtually the same rate of assists (21 of 26, 80.8).

Owls' Opening Weekend in Preview
On Friday night, the Owls will play host to Florida, facing off against them for the fourth straight season. The Gators had a losing record for the first time in program history last year, at 7-10-4 overall, and saw a 15-year streak of NCAA Tournament appearances snapped. SEC coaches chose the Gators fifth in the league's preseason poll, and in the United Soccer Coaches preseason balloting, they received 70 votes, ranking just outside the Top 25 as the second team out.

The weekend culminates with a match against Grand Canyon. The Lopes ended 2018 with a 6-13-2 mark, finishing fourth in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and bowing out in the first round of their postseason tournament. WAC coaches voted the team fifth in the league's preseason poll.

Opponent History
The Owls are looking for their first-ever win against UF, with the Gators holding a 6-0-1 all-time advantage. Two years ago, Florida prevailed on an overtime score, the only goal of the game, in Boca Raton. Last season in Gainesville, it was a 4-2 UF win.

FAU and GCU have never met.

Following these two home matches, and sandwich just before five more in a row at FAU Soccer Stadium, is two road contests for the Owls next week. On Thursday night, the team takes the short trip down south to Coral Gables to take on Miami, and then will head west to Lawrence, Kansas, to face off against the Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday, Sept. 1.
