McLelland Set to Join a Ranked FAU Women’s Tennis Team

Louie McLelland is set to join the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team when the 2019 fall semester begins.
"I'm super excited that Louie will be joining the team," said FAU women's tennis coach Caroline Wheelen. "Louie brings the 3 C's to the FAU Owls – calm, cool, and collected. She is going to frustrate her opponents with her mature game and I can't wait to se her dominate in the lineup. I anticipate her to be ranked in the nation's top 50 in doubles in a short time. She is fit and we are excited to see her game flourish in all the warm outdoor training and tennis-specific beach fitness."
McLelland will bring two seasons of collegiate tennis to the otherwise young Owls. The native of Stirling, Scotland played her first two years of college tennis at fellow Conference USA member Old Dominion. That familiarity will help the Owls, who raced to the C-USA semifinal round in 2019 and who held a season-ending No. 66 national rank, despite just one senior/upperclassman on the squad.
While at ODU, McLelland posted a 12-6 freshman singles record and a perfect 6-0 mark in doubles. She also succeeded academically as well, being named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. She played her second season for a Monarch team that completed the year ranked No. 41 nationally and posted a 19-5 record, including a perfect 11-0 home mark. McLelland was a member of the first ODU team to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Prior to college, McLelland earned a 4.0 G.P.A as a student while competing internationally beginning at the age of 14. She held the No. 1 rank in all of the United Kingdom for the under-16, as well as under-18, age divisions. McLelland won the U-18 Scottish Indoor Nationals and was the Scottish National Outdoors champion for U-16 and U-18. In 2015, McLelland won a silver medal in the Junior Commonwealth games, while representing Scotland.
"Choosing to be a part of the FAU tennis family seemed very straight forward to me," said McLelland. "I spoke with both coach Marcy (Cava) and Caroline. When I was looking to transfer and tey were great. I learned about their goals as a team and what sort of player they were looking to add their roster. Right away, I knew we would get on well."
McLelland will join a team comprised of three juniors and three sophomores, all of whom have a mindset of improving upon the team's national ranking.
