Florida Atlantic University women's tennis grew by one on Wednesday, with the addition of
Radka Buzkova.
"Radka was a very highly sought-after tennis player, so I feel so lucky that she chose FAU to call home for her college tennis career," said FAU women's tennis coach
Caroline Wheelen. "She has one of the most impressive backhands that I have seen in my coaching career. When I saw her play, I knew we had to have her. I love that she wants to be ranked in singles, doubles and play on a top 50 team. But, best of all is her mental strength. Radka is a real thinker and uses smart strategies instead of simple minded tennis. I'm so excited to see her rip backhand winners and dominate her matches."
Buzkova will join the team as a true freshman, but brings a strong résumé of competitive tennis to the Owls. The native of Bohutin, Prague is a two-sport athlete competing in both tennis and track. Her track speciality was the 800 meters, which will play to her advantage during the well-known FAU women's tennis beach runs and heavy fitness based program.
On the courts, where she started playing at age four, Buzkova has held a national top-five ranking from age 12 on, climbing to as high as No. 2. She held a European ranking of No. 25 for U14. She was nominated and played in the U16 Fed Cup where the team finished fifth. Buzkova also captured the National Junior Indoor Championship.
"I choose FAU because of a level of play and the great opportunities to get better in my sport," said Buzkova. "I like the idea of being on a team with players from my country. And, what I'm most exited about is to play tennis under blue skies, traveling throughout the USA and playing team matches."
Buzkova will join a team comprised of four juniors and three sophomores. She will be the second player from Prague and the third player to call the Czech Republic home.
