BOCA RATON, Fla. – Conference USA has announced each school's recipient of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, and the Florida Atlantic University honoree is baseball's Diamond Johnson.
Â
Johnson came to the Owls prior to last season, from St. Petersburg College, and hails from Tampa. In his two-year career, he played in 81 games with nearly 40 starts in the outfield, and started his career off with a bang, with a two-run walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat George Washington in the opening series of 2018. He posted a career-best .289 average this season with multi-hit games in each of his first three starts, and was flawless in the field all year long. Johnson will receive his bachelor's degree in sociology in August and plans to pursue a master's in higher education beginning this fall.
He follows in the footsteps of these previous FAU recipients:
The 11th annual award is named in honor of Dr. Jim Castañeda, who served Rice for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in 2008. Every season, C-USA grants the $4,000 scholarship to distinguished graduates selected by the league's Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
