BOCA RATON, Fla. – Pitching shutout baseball into the eighth inning and earning the win in Saturday's 1-0 victory over FIU, Florida Atlantic University junior righthander
Mike Ruff added a conference accolade to his resume Monday, as Conference USA's Pitcher of the Week.
Â
Ruff continued his hot streak as of late, earning Saturday's win in a classic 1-0 pitcher's duel. He scattered four hits in 7 2/3 innings, a new career high, and set another best standard of 11 strikeouts. After issuing a leadoff walk, he retired 16 of the next 17, including a stretch of 10 in a row.
Â
Of the four hits against the Orlando native, all singles, two were bunts and one was a dribbler in front of the plate (with the other being the only one to leave the infield). Prior to his final inning, only one runner reached second base, and the eighth was the only frame that multiple runners got on against him.
Â
Ruff is 4-0 on the year, with all of those wins coming in his last five starts. Over that stretch, he holds a 2.84 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings, and holds opposing hitters to a .207 batting average. In his last four outings, he is 3-0 with a 2.19 ERA. The Owls are 6-1 in his seven starts on the year.
Â
After a midweek matchup at Miami, Ruff will likely again be the Saturday starter this weekend on the road at Charlotte. The Owls return home the following weekend, April 12-14, hosting Louisiana Tech. Get tickets now by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visiting
