Palmer Recognized as Senior Class Award Candidate
3/19/2019 2:16:00 PM | Softball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Senior outfielder Madisyn Palmer has been named as one of 30 candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award. The award is given to student-athletes who have extraordinary achievements in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School.
Â
Palmer is one of two candidates chosen from Conference USA, with the other senior being Louisiana Tech's Morgan Turkoly. Palmer's nomination marks the third consecutive year an FAU softball player has been nominated.
Â
As a three-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll member, Palmer puts her academics first and it shows. Palmer is a health sciences major with the aspirations of becoming a nurse. This past semester, Palmer recorded a 3.9 GPA and made the FAU Honor Roll for the seventh consecutive semester. The New Port Richey, Florida native is on track to earn her bachelor's degree in the spring.
Â
When Palmer is on the field, people may speak of her speed or athleticism, but that is not the complete story of who she is. She is an excellent role model for the underclassman and a respectable colleague on whom the upperclassmen can rely on. Palmer has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, John's Hopkins Children's Hospital, pediatric cancer support and assisted living facilities. She also volunteers at several local softball camps and clinics around South Florida, as she is a girl whom many young softball players can look up to.
Â
Palmer was named C-USA Freshman of the Year, as well as a two-time All-Conference First Team selection and NFCA All-Region Second Team choice. She hit .387 last season (.414 in conference) with 25 RBI, 46 runs scored, 72 hits and a school-record 48 stolen bases on 52 attempts. Earlier this season, she broke the school record for career stolen bases and now has 138 in her career. Palmer was also selected to the 2019 Preseason All-Conference Team as an outfielder.
Â
The Senior CLASS Award emphasizes the total student-athlete, while encouraging students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in the community. The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists in the latter part of the season. Those 10 names will be placed on an official ballot and will be distributed through a nationwide voting system where fans, coaches and media will select one candidate. The 2019 winner will be announced during the 2019 Women's College World Series.
Â
FAU will be back in Boca Raton this weekend to host UAB for the first home conference series of the 2019 season. Live stats are available here and live video can be accessed at fausports.tv.
