DENTON, Texas – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (5-20, 2-10 C-USA) were led by freshman
Amber Gaston on Thursday night in a 82-62 loss at North Texas (13-11, 6-6 C-USA).
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
- Gaston started the night scoring the first seven points of the game for the Owls. After trading baskets for the first half of the first period, North Texas hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push their lead to six. With 2:27 left, the Mean Green led by eight but the Owls ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to go into the second period down, 17-15
- In the first three minutes of the second quarter, North Texas came out blazing, outscoring the Owls, 13-2. Jamaria Williams and Addison Ryan each scored for FAU to stop the bleeding and the Owls were able to get the deficit back to seven. The Mean Green took a 10-point lead into halftime
- North Texas jumped out to a 16-point lead to start the third quarter, but FAU used a 7-0 run to cut it to nine. That would be the last time the Owls would be within single digits
GAME NOTES
- Gaston's 21 points were a career high and the first time the freshman has had 20-plus points this season. She also had four rebounds and a block
- Myka Johnson Matthews was the second leading scorer for the Owls with 11 points. She was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line
- Williams finished with 10 points and tied her career high in rebounds with six
- Ra'Kyra Gabriel led FAU on the boards with eight rebounds, propelling her to ninth place on the FAU all-time career rebounding list. The senior now has 477 career rebounds
- Ryan had a career-high six points in the contest along with a career high in rebounds with five
