BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team got the Sunday win over Bethune-Cookman 6-3 to wrap up the third and final day at the FAU First Pitch Classic. Each of the Owls' six runs were scored in the first inning and proved to be enough to secure the victory and start the season with a 3-2 record.

"We had a chance to get everyone in the game with the six runs in the first inning," said Head Coach Joan Joyce. "We always preach that we need to win Sunday, and we won Sunday. That will be our chore all year."

Key Plays
In the bottom of the first inning, Samantha Lageyre reached on a fielder's choice but thanks to a fielding error by Bethune-Cookman, Ashleigh Jennings and Danielle Bieberle scored. With the bases loaded, Lauren Whitt drew up a walk, putting the Owls up 3-0. Kaitlyn Burke then hammered a double to right field to send in three runs (Lauren Whitt, Jolie Duffner and Mia Olson). Following Bethune-Cookman's pitching change in the first inning, the Owls were unable to score another run, but a strong performance by the FAU pitching was enough to go out of Sunday with a win.

Notables

Kelsey Morrison (2-0) got the start in the circle and pitched three innings, allowing five hits and one earned run
Lageyre recorded two RBI in the game and four total on the weekend. She has commenced the season with a .333 batting average
Burke's first hit of the year drew in three runs
Bieberle stole two bases on the afternoon
Sloan Hammons pitched three innings in relief for Morrison and recorded two strikeouts and no earned runs
Several freshman made their collegiate softball debut: Danielle Pasquariello at first base, Tyler Colby at third base and pitcher Abigail Morgan, who came in relief in the top of the seventh
