IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (0-1) dropped their road opener at (RV) Iowa (1-0) Thursday night, 85-53. The Owls were within 13 points going into the fourth, but Iowa outscored the Owls 26-9 to pull the FAU's comeback away from reach.
- The Owls came out strong in the beginning of the first quarter, hiking the lead 12-7 thanks to Amber Gaston and Lotta Veha-Aho tallying five points apiece early. That lead would not last for long, as Iowa went on a 12-2 run to close out the first quarter, 19-15
- FAU came back strong in the second frame of play, capitalizing on each of the four times players got to the line in the first seven minutes. With 2:32 left to play in the half, Vehka-Aho came up with a steal and took it all the way down the court to pull the Owls within one, 26-25
- Iowa would then go on another run, 12-3, to close out the half with a nine point lead, 38-29
- The Owls started out the second half strong yet again, which got started by Amber Gaston pulling away in the paint for a layup. Glenisha Harkless would then bank two of her foul shots to pull the Owls within three, 40-37 with six minutes left to play in the quarter
- That three-point deficit was the closest the Owls would be to the Hawkeyes the rest of the game, as Iowa would then go on multiple runs, including their big one in the fourth. Three Owl players fouled out of the game, two being starters, making it that more difficult to deliver a comeback in Iowa City
- In her official Owl debut, Crystal Primm came up with a double-double, as she recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds
- Vehka-Aho played in all but 45 seconds of the contest, dashing in 13 points, four boards, five assists and three steals
- Gaston was the third Owl to reach double digits, coming up with 10 points and six rebounds
- Harkless record seven points and three boards
- Six different Owls made their debut in the red and blue, including Primm, Vehka-Aho, Alexa Zaph, Tanyia Gordon, Nikola Ozola and Allie Tylka
The Owls will continue their road stand next week, as they take a trip to Virginia to face Hampton on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Richmond on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.
FAU will hold their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 19 against Siena at 7 p.m. For tickets, call 1-800-FAU-OWLS or visit
