BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (0-1) will hit the road once again, this time to the state of Virginia to take on Hampton (2-0). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center with the game being streamed on ESPN+.
The Owls are looking to bounce back after falling on the road to Iowa Thursday night. Through one game,
Crystal Primm leads the Owls with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while
Lotta Vehka-Aho follows with 13 points and a team's most five assists and 39 minutes played. Head coach
Jim Jabir is in his third season as the head coach with just 10 wins away from his 500th. His 2019-20 squad is made up of 11 newcomers and six returners. The team is truly from all over, representing six countries and seven different states. In the yearly preseason poll, the Owls were picked to finish 10th in Conference USA, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
FAU fell on the road to (RV) Iowa, 85-53 in a game that was closer than the score may indicate. The Owls came knocking on the Hawkeyes' door multiple times during the contest and with 6:06 left to go in the third quarter, FAU was down just 40-37. Primm led the Owls with 14 points and 10 rebounds, recording her first double-double in an Owl uniform. Guard Vehka-Aho played in all but 45 seconds of the game to tally an impressive stat line of 13 points, four boards, five assists and three steals.
Amber Gaston was the third Owl to reach double digits with 10 points and six boards. The Owls also played in front of a crowd of 3,334, their biggest audience since competing at No. 22 Michigan State last December.
Hampton is going into Thursday's game with a 2-0 record, as both wins were tallied on the road. The Pirates knocked off Power Five opponent Alabama last Wednesday, 64-61, thanks to Makayla Timmons, who banked a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Pirates would take that momentum into the weekend, as they rolled past Chattanooga, 84-55. The top three scorers for Hampton account for 74 percent of their offensive production. Laren VanArsdale leads with 21 points and four assists per game, while Timmons follows (18 points and four rebounds per game). Ashley Bates is also scoring in double figures with 16 points and six rebounds per game.
The Owls have the edge on the Pirates in the series, 2-1. Last season in the Owls' season opener, FAU fell to Hampton for the first time, 72-68. Three different Owls reached double digits, including
Juliette Gauthier in her inaugural collegiate debut with 13 points, seven assists and seven boards.
Abby Voss pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, as well. Prior to last season's meeting, the last time the two teams squared off was in 1995 with FAU going on to win at home, 74-55. The first time these two met was in 1989 in Hampton, where the Owls would go on to win, 86-82.
The Owls will close out their road trip to Virginia on Saturday, as they will face Richmond at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
