BOCA RATON, Fla. – For the third straight season, Alex Maxson of the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer has been honored for her work in the classroom, with Conference USA All-Academic First Team Honors coming her way Monday courtesy of the league's academic advisors.
Maxson stars on the field – as the team's most durable player – and off it as well. She was chosen to the C-USA All-Academic Second Team as a sophomore and to the First Team last year, and now repeats that honor again this season. She will soon earn her degree with a double major, holding a 3.88 cumulative GPA. In May, she is due to walk with a bachelor of business administration, in finance and international business.
This past Friday on her Senior Night, helping to lead the Owls to the regular season title, the Naples, Florida native recorded her 77th career appearance and 75th start at centerback. She has tallied a total of 6,590 minutes in the field in her four years (ranking fourth on the FAU all-time list), and that includes a team-high 1,582 this year. Counting 12 occurrences this year, there have been 44 times in her career she has played the entirety of a match. And she was also honored by the league coaches last year as Third Team All-C-USA.
"It's such an honor to be recognized by Conference USA for all my academic success in the classroom," said Maxson. "This is the result of tremendous support from my teammates, coaches and academic staff. This award, along with my team's success, has made for yet another great year at FAU."
FAU continues a streak of now seven straight years having at least one Owl chosen as C-USA All-Academic – every season since joining the league. Maxson, obviously, had already been a multi-year member, only the second after Claire Emslie from 2013-15. Now the duo are each three-year honorees. Here is the complete list of Owls to have been honored:
Maxson and the Owls head into the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the 2019 C-USA Championship, beginning Wednesday in the quarterfinal round against Louisiana Tech. The match will be carried live on ESPN+, from Denton, Texas, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Eastern.
