BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (1-1) will look to close out a successful road trip in Virginia tomorrow as they are set to face Richmond (2-1). Saturday's tilt is set for 6 p.m. with the game also being streamed on ESPN+.
FAU looks to build upon the huge momentum they initiated Thursday night at Hampton with a 64-63 victory. Through two games,
Crystal Primm leads the team with 14 points with
Lotta Vehka-Aho following her with 13 points and a team-leading eight assists.
Juliette Gauthier and Primm have both pulled down an average of eight boards a game, which leads the team. Guards Vehka-Aho and
Alexa Zaph each have four steals, while forward
Amber Gaston has come up with a team-leading four blocks. The 2019-20 Owls represent six different countries (Canada, Finland, France, Latvia, Spain and U.S.) and seven states (Florida, Illinois, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia).
The Owls pulled out a thrilling victory at Hampton Thursday night, as Vehka-Aho hit the game-winning jumper at the buzzer to elevate the Owls to a 64-63 victory. The win marked the first for the Owls this season, while handing Hampton their first loss consequently on their home opener. This win also marked the third time in
Jim Jabir's FAU coaching career that the Owls won a game they were trailing with less than five minutes left in the contest. Primm led the team in points for the second straight game with 14, while being 6-10 from the field. Vehka-Aho was in foul trouble for majority of the second half, but was still able to hit the game-winning shot, while recording 11 points, three assists and three steals.
Juliette Gauthier's strong second half bumped up her point total to 10, while also having a team-leading nine rebounds and four assists, including one on the game-winning shot.
Astou Gaye had an impressive showing in her Owl debut, recording eight points, three rebounds and a block in just 12 minutes.
Amber Gaston also tallied her third career game with 3+ blocks.
Richmond is going into Saturday's home opener with a 2-1 record. The Spiders opened up their season with a win on UNCG's home court, 70-62. After taking a 78-59 loss at C-USA's Charlotte, the Spiders bounced back last Tuesday with a 51-49 victory over Georgetown. Alex Parson, who leads the team in assists with 12, knocked down two free throws with six seconds left in the game to pull the Spiders ahead in the two-point with after the Hoyas' 3-point attempt at the buzzer was no good. After three games, Jaide Hinds-Clark is the Spiders' leading scorer with 13.3 points per game, while also leading the way with six boards per game and seven steals this season. She also tallied a season-high 17 points last time out against the Hoyas.
Richmond currently leads FAU in the series, 1-2, with their first win coming last season in a 69-55 victory in Boca Raton. In the previous meeting, graduated seniors Myka Johnson-Matthews and
Ra'Kyra Gabriel recorded 17 points apiece.
Juliette Gauthier was the leading returner with nine points and four boards, while
Abby Voss pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds. Previous to last season, Richmond came down to South Florida for the 2016 FAU Thanksgiving Tournament, but the Spiders had the 77-67 edge in the matchup. The first meeting between the Owls and Spiders took place at the Miami Holiday Classic on Dec. 8, 1995, where FAU fell in overtime, 91-88. Saturday's game will mark the first time the Owls will play at Richmond.
