BOCA RATON, Fla. – Four months ago a Florida Atlantic University freshman,
Martina Kudelova, was bestowed Conference Freshman of the Year honors. It was the second time in as many years. As the 2019-20 academic year began, the Owls welcomed four incoming freshmen. Those freshmen have taken south Florida by storm.
The majority of the group made their collegiate debut at the UM Classic in Coral Gables, Florida. This weekend they traveled to Fort Myers, Florida where once again they were the talk of the tournament.
Freshmen Radaka Buzkova and junior newcomer
Louie McLelland, backed up the talk. Buzkova with a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 victory over Florida's Tsveta Dimitrova to take the A Flight Consolation Bracket. McLelland needed three sets to take the B Flight from Sydney Berlin, also from UF by the scores of 6-4, 4-6, 11-9.
The FAU doubles team of Radaka Buzkova and
May Kimhi fell to Ana Paula/Lucia Montano (UNF) 6-2 in the Flight A Finals, also on Sunday.
"Louie winning the Bedford Cup isn't a surprise to us," said head coach
Caroline Wheelen. "She is just that good of a player to dominate over teams like UCF, UF, Stetson, UNF, FIU and UNF. The matches took a little longer for her due to the sprain ankle she has been dealing with the last three weeks, but that's the life of a college tennis players. What separates Louie is the ability to see the match clearly and do what is necessary to win even when her body isn't 100%."
