Velta, Fournand, Jalon Named FAU Players of the Week

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University athletic department has recognized soccer players Pernille Velta and Hagay Jalon, as well as women's golfer Justine Fournand as student-athletes of the week.
Fournand helped the women's golf team take home record performances at the 2019 Pat Bradley Invitational. The freshman won her first collegiate individual title after shooting 68, 67 and 70 for a 205 total. Her 11-under total was one stroke better than the second-place finisher from Stetson. Overall, women's golf finished in second, posting an 860, which is by far the lowest team score in program history.
Velta had a remarkable weekend in FAU's sweep over North Texas and Rice to hep women's soccer jump into first place in the Conference USA standings. On Friday night, the senior forward scored the only goal, a penalty kick, to top the Mean Green, 1-0. In the Owls' Sunday afternoon matchup against Rice, Velta scored in the 3rd and 19th minutes for a 2-0 lead, and assisted on what would later become the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory.
Jalon helped the men's soccer team pull out a 1-0 overtime win over No. 15 Marshall Saturday night. The redshirt senior recorded his second blank sheet of the season to move him up the sixth all-time in career shutouts at FAU. The shutout also marked the Thundering Herd's first shutout loss of the season, who came into the match outscoring opponents 37-12. Jalon recorded three crucial saves on the night to help the Owls claim their biggest win of the season.
Women's soccer will play once more at FAU Soccer Stadium on Friday night against rival FIU. Senior Night festivities will take place prior to the 7 p.m. match.
The women's golf team will gear up for the spring season, as they will open up play Feb. 10-11 for the FAU Winter Warm Up at Osprey Point in Boca Raton, Florida.
Men's soccer will hit the road to North Florida on Wednesday to face the Osprey of North Florida for their final non-conference game of the season. First touch is set for 6 p.m. in Jacksonville, Florida.
