Former Owl Baseball Star Chatham to Represent USA

BOCA RATON, Fla. – USA Baseball announced its roster for the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Premier12™ on Thursday. The squad gives Team USA their first opportunity to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and the 28-man roster includes former Florida Atlantic University star and current Boston Red Sox minor leaguer C.J. Chatham.
Chatham, who played for the Owls from 2014-16 and was a 2016 All-American by six different outlets while also being named Conference USA Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, has continued his success and ascent through the Red Sox organization this summer. This year at AA Portland, he batted .297 with 26 doubles, three home runs and 36 RBI, earning a late-season promotion to AAA Pawtucket. He continued to swing the bat well there, raising his average to .302 with two more homers and 10 RBI.
Following the season, Chatham was assigned to the prestigious Arizona Fall League, playing for Peoria. Through his first 10 games for the Javelinas, he was batting .300, getting on base at a .364 clip, and had four doubles, six RBI, and 11 runs scored. He was also named to the Arizona Fall League All-Star Game, which takes place this Saturday.
The U.S. WBSC Premier12™ squad is made up of 15 pitchers and 13 position players currently not on an MLB 40-man roster. The team is to be managed by Joe Girardi, and features assistant coaches Scott Brosius, Roly de Armas, Phil Plantier, Bryan Price, Willie Randolph and Ernie Young.
About the WBSC Premier12™ schedule and qualifying process
The U.S. will start play the WBSC Premier12™ in Guadalajara, Mexico, from Nov. 2-4 as a member of Group A with the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the Netherlands. The top two nations from Group A will advance to the Super Round in Tokyo from Nov. 11-16. The top finisher from both the Americas territory and Asia/Oceania territory (excluding Japan) will join host country Japan and WBSC Baseball Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier champion Israel in the six-team Olympic tournament. The final two Olympic berths will be decided in March 2020.
