CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (3-14, 0-4 C-USA) dropped a 68-47 decision to Charlotte (10-6, 2-2 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon. The Owls overcame a slow start in the first period, but a four-point second period put the Owls behind.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Myka Johnson Matthews put the first FAU points on the board with a three in the opening minutes for the second consecutive game. The Owls took a 5-4 lead on a pair of free throws from Ra'Kyra Gabriel. Charlotte outscored the Owls 14-1 from there to take an 18-6 lead. After a FAU timeout, the Owls held the 49ers to zero points for the final 4:30 of the quarter. Amber Gaston scored five-straight to kick off a 9-0 run for the Owls, ending the quarter down 18-15
After ending the first quarter on a hot streak, FAU cooled off in the second. Overall, Charlotte outscored the Owls, 17-4
The second half was more balanced on the scoring front. Overall, the 49ers outscored the Owls 33-28 in the half

GAME NOTES
Gaston tied her career high with 15 points in the contest along with seven rebounds, three rebounds and one assist in 24 minutes of action
Gabriel was one point shy of double digits with nine. She also had seven rebounds and a block. The senior eclipsed 500 career points during the game and now has 506 in her four-year career. With the block, Gabriel moves into sole possession of ninth place on the career blocks list at FAU
The Owls had six blocks in the game, which ties their season high also reached in the first game of the year against Hampton
Both teams were fairly even on the boards. Charlotte pulled down 40 rebounds and FAU had 38 on the night

FAU will return home for the next three games, including two next week. The Owls will host Marshall on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. and then WKU on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2:00 p.m.
