BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team has announced its 2018-19 schedule. The slate includes 16 home games to be played at FAU Arena, while 13 games will be played on the road.
"This is the most challenging schedule FAU has ever played," head coach Jim Jabir said. "We welcome the opportunity to put our young team through this great challenge."
The Owls will take on Lynn in the preseason for the second consecutive season, hosting the Fighting Knights at FAU Arena on November 1 at 7 p.m.
FAU will host Hampton to open the regular season on November 7 at 11 a.m. Tabbed as an Education Game, local elementary and middle schools will be in attendance for the game. Hampton finished last season 18-14 and played for the MEAC Tournament title, losing in overtime.
The Owls will stay in FAU Arena for the second game of the year, welcoming Georgia State on November 10 at 12 p.m. The Panthers will be under new leadership with head coach Gene Hill taking over the program.
FAU's first road game will come against a tough opponent in UALR. The Trojans won the Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles last season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament to face Florida State.
Next will be a three-game homestand for the Owls with a game against Richmond on November 18 and the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament on November 23-24. FAU will face Lafayette College at noon on Friday of the tournament and then face either Bradley or Delaware on Saturday.
Following the homestand, FAU will play three-consecutive away games. First the Owls will travel to New Orleans to take on Tulane on November 28 at 8 p.m. Then FAU will go to Albany, New York to face Siena on December 1 before going to Greenville, South Carolina to play against Furman on December 12.
The Owls will return home to host Western Michigan on December 16 at 2 p.m. and then will wrap up non-conference travel at Michigan State on December 20.
FAU will host the annual FAU Holiday Classic at FAU Arena on December 28-29. The Owls will play North Carolina A&T on Friday and then will take on Yale or St. Louis on Saturday. North Carolina A&T was 23-9 last season, winning the MEAC Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA the Aggies gave South Carolina game, coming up short 63-52.
January brings Conference USA play for the Owls. First on the slate is 2017-18 regular season champions UAB on January 3 at FAU Arena at 7 p.m. FAU will then host Middle Tennessee on January 5 at 2 p.m.
The Owls will then go on the road to face Old Dominion (January 10) and Charlotte (January 12) before returning to Boca Raton for three-straight games. FAU will host Marshall (January 17), 2018 C-USA Tournament champions Western Kentucky (January 19) and in-state rival FIU (January 26).
FAU ends January at Louisiana Tech on January 31 then travels to Southern Miss on Feb. 2. The Owls will host the Texas pair of UTEP (Feb. 7) and UTSA (Feb. 9) before traveling to the Lone Star state to face North Texas (Feb. 14) and Rice (Feb. 16).
To close out the season, the Owls will play FIU (February 23), Middle Tennessee (March 2) and Old Dominion (March 7) for a second time. FAU will travel to Miami and Murfreesboro and end the regular season in Boca Raton against the Monarchs.
The 2018-19 Conference USA Championship will be held March 13-16 in Frisco, Texas at The Ford Center.
The Owls return five letterwinners from the 2017-18 squad that finished seventh in Conference USA with a 13-15 overall record. Danneal Ford and Ra'Kyra Gabriel will back on the court for FAU as seniors. Both players played in every game last season while Ford started in every contest. Ford was the only player in C-USA last season to average 10-or-more points, four-or-more assists and 4.9-or-more rebounds.
FAU will have nine newcomers in 2018-19. While she isn't new to the team, Myka Johnson Matthews will put on the Owls jersey for the first time after sitting out last season due to transfer rules. The youth of the team shows with eight freshmen on the roster.
