GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University women's soccer faced their second straight in-state opponent, and on Sunday, were upended by No. 7 Florida, 4-2.
Turning Point:
The Gators (2-0-0) scored twice in the first half, and less than a minute into the second, extended the lead out to 3-0. FAU (0-2-0) was able to capitalize five minutes later, when on the third opportunity in the box, Tiril Haga beat the UF goalkeeper left for her second goal of the season. Another Florida goal in the 62nd minute pushed it back out to a three-goal edge.
The Finish:
A beautiful set piece in the 77th led to the Owls' second goal. Emma Jacobs served it to the left side of the box, and a streaking Ebba Blomqvist headed it in on a full-out dive to cut it back down to two. That would unfortunately be the last score of the match, and the Owls would be held to just one more shot in the remaining 12-plus minutes.
Notables:
Haga's goal, again her second in as many matches, was assisted on by Pernille Velta
Jacobs' assist was the first of her collegiate career, and Blomqvist notched goal No. 6 since joining FAU
Piggybacking on 19 Owls playing Friday, 22 got in Sunday night, all playing at least 11 minutes
All told, 15 Owls logged at least 30 minutes on the pitch
Quotable:
"I think we've proven we can score some goals," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "Unfortunately, we've let up some. But, great atmosphere, it's an honor to play the University of Florida. We're thankful that we're one of the teams that they choose to play in the he non-conference. Excited about some of our stuff tonight, disappointed in others. I thought we took two well-taken goals, and had some other chances, just didn't either pull the trigger, get the ball across the face of goal, or put it on frame. It's still early."
