Football’s Gerald Hearns Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

Florida Atlantic University football's Gerald Hearns has been named to the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, announced by the National College Football Awards Association on Thursday.
The 106 member list exemplifies student-athletes who are dedicated not only to work on the field, but are a top community servant. The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually at the All Sports Association's Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Hearns saw action in eight games in 2017, tallying 11 carries for 67 yards. He is a high-energy vocal player who aided the Owls to victories in the C-USA Championship game and the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl. The C-USA title was FAU's first C-USA crown and it was the first bowl game for the Owls since the back-to-back berths in 2007 and 2008. FAU finished 2017 with an 11-3 regular-season total and a perfect 8-0 record in league play.
The Owls, who are on the country's second longest winning streak (10), will report to campus for preseason drills Thursday, Aug. 2. FAU will open the 2018 season at Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 1 at noon. The game will be carried on Fox.
