Big Hole Early Dooms FAU Baseball Sunday vs. UAB
4/29/2018 12:00:00 AM | Baseball
BOCA RATON, Fla. - UAB scored 10 runs in the first three innings, and took the weekend conference series with a 12-5 Sunday victory over Florida Atlantic University baseball.
Quotable
"We did not pitch well, and we had a chance to score some runs but weren't able to," said Head Coach John McCormack. "They made some pitches when they had to. Right from the beginning, we didn't pitch well and the bullpen didn't help out. Those things are going to happen."
The Turning Point
UAB (19-22, 11-10 Conference USA) scored two in the first, three in the second and five more in the third for a double-digit lead. FAU (30-12-1, 14-6-1 C-USA) got four back in their half of the third, all with two outs. Eric Rivera doubled in Richie Nizza, Cody Wilson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Jared DeSantolo notched a two-run single. But with the bases loaded, a strikeout ended any more of a threat than that.
The Finish
After a two-run Brett Blackwood home run in the sixth, the Owls scored one more on a fielding error in the bottom. But that was all they'd get, even with DeSantolo's fourth hit of the day in the eighth, and two singles in their last at-bat, by Diamond Johnson and Jacob Pino.
The Bats
- DeSantolo's 4-for-4 showing is a career high, and the freshman is now batting .400 on the season
- Rivera's RBI in the third is his team-high 35th
The Arms
- Jordan Poore was saddled with the loss, dropping to 1-1
- Bright spots on the mound included Nick Swan (1 2/3 innings, one hit, no runs), Chris Moore (scoreless seventh and eighth) and Nick Prather (a no-run ninth for the second game in a row)
- The pitching was aided by three double plays turned on the afternoon by the FAU infield
What's Next
The next four games for FAU are on the road. Tuesday night, they head to Orlando for a 6:30 game against UCF, and next weekend, it's just south in Miami against FIU. The next "home" game is Tuesday, May 8, at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches against UCF again. Only one more home series remains at FAU Baseball Stadium, May 17-19 vs. WKU.
