No. 25 Baseball Overwhelms Bethune-Cookman Tuesday, 14-2

BOCA RATON, Fla. -Â All nine Owls' starting batters had at least one hit -Â towards a season-high 17 -Â and all scored a run or more, in No. 25 Florida Atlantic University baseball's Tuesday night rout of visiting Bethune-Cookman, 14-2.
Quotable
"We did what we needed to do," said Head Coach John McCormack. "In conference (play), sometimes these midweek games are not easy because you're looking ahead towards the weekend, especially flying on Thursday. I thought Jordan (Poore) did a nice job in his first start, I thought Marc Stewart was really good in relief, and offensively, we were able to make some things happen and we got the 'W,' just get the win and move on."
The Turning Point
The Owls (27-9) scored first, in the first, with David Miranda doubling in Tyler Frank. Bethune-Cookman (14-23) tied it up at 1-1 in the third, and after two runs for FAU in their half of the third (a Joe Montes double scoring Frank again, and a two-out Pedro Pages single), the Wildcats cut it back to one at 3-2 in the fourth. It became a 5-2 Owl lead in the fourth after Jacob Pino and Richie Nizza singled, and both came in on a two-run double by Frank, and the offense exploded in the seventh.
The Finish
Three straight singles - by Miranda, Pages and Eric Rivera - loaded the bases to start the inning, and two runs came in on a Cody Wilson double off the rightfield fence. Two pitches later, two more scored on a Gunnar Lambert single, but the inning was far from over, as Nizza doubled in Lambert and he himself scored on the relay throw and an error. Then, after a walk to Frank, Jared DeSantolo sent a 1-0 pitch into the trees in right center to complete an eight-run frame. The cherry on top came in the eighth, when Lambert launched a first-pitch homer deep to right. All the while, Owls' pitching threw up zeroes in relief of winning pitcher Jordan Poore, improving FAU to 19-3 at home in 2018.
The Bats
- Again, all nine FAU starters -Â plus reserves DeSantolo and Andru Summerall - had hits
- Frank, Miranda, Pages, Lambert, Nizza and DeSantolo all had two hits
- Frank scored three runs, Lambert and Nizza two each, and seven other Owls once
- Lambert's three RBI are not only a season, but also a career, high
- Both of freshman DeSantolo's two career home runs have been the only two FAU pinch-hit homers this season
The Arms
- Poore earned the win in his first career start, allowing one earned run and striking out three in four innings
- Stewart had his longest relief outing of the year, three scoreless innings, with three K's as well
- Nick Swan pitched a scoreless eighth, and redshirt freshman Chris Moore followed suit in the ninth, helped out by a 4-6-3 double play that went Blake Sanderson to Frank to Lambert. In fact, every ball in the inning was hit to Sanderson at second base, including the 27th and final out
What's Next
The Owls go west to face Conference USA's other Owls, from Rice, this Friday-Sunday in Houston. Next Tuesday marks the team's first of two games in West Palm Beach at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, and a week from Friday, the team returns to FAU Baseball Stadium to host UAB in the first of three.
