Softball Splits Doubleheader with Florida Gulf Coast

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team split a pair of extra-inning games in a doubleheader with Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday. FAU grabbed the win in the first game on a 5-4 walkoff single from Madisyn Palmer and dropped the second game to the Eagles 4-1. FAU is now 22-21 on the season.
Game 1
Key Plays
The early going was a flurry of activity as each team scored in three of the game's first four innings. The Eagles led 1-0 when Emily Lochten scored on a Madisyn Palmer base hit to tie the game. The Owls held FGCU scoreless in the top of the second, then took a 2-1 lead when Amanda Peck's bloop single plated Alex Miller. After FGCU evened the score again with a run in the top of the third, Palmer drove Lochten in for a second time to regain a 3-2 advantage for the Owls in the bottom half of the inning. The Eagles answered with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to go back on top 4-3. Lochten's second double of the contest knotted the count at 4-4, allowing Amanda Peck to score in the bottom of the seventh. The Owls had the winning run on second with just one out, but came up empty. Samantha Lageyre led off the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff walk, then moved up on an infield single by Peck. Lageyre advanced to third when Lochten flew out to right, then scored on Palmer's single to the third baseman to give the Owls a walkoff win.
Notables
- Emily Lochten had two doubles, three stolen bases, drove in a run and scored twice.
- Madisyn Palmer posted three hits and three RBI.
- In her first appearance in the batting order in nearly three weeks, Amanda Peck went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. She also stole a base.
- Jolie Duffner and Tatum Buckley also notched hits for FAU.
- Lauren Whitt drew walks in all four plate appearances.
- Kara Lokeinsky pitched two shutout innings in relief to pick up her first career win.
Game 2
Key Plays
Emily Lochten doubled to left field in the third inning then later scored on a wild pitch. The Eagles tied it up at one with a double from Racquel Fournet to score Kate Kelly in the sixth inning. The score didn't change again until the top of the eighth, when Ashley Swiderski sent a three-run homer over the fence in left. The Owls got a baserunner in the bottom of the inning, but a double play ended the game.

- In addition to Lochten, Tatum Buckley also had a double.
- Madisyn Palmer singled and stole a base.
- Lauren Whitt walked twice and had reached on a hit by pitch.
