Owls Give Up Lead Late, Fall at ODU

NORFOLK, Va. â€" The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team dropped a 59-54 decision at Old Dominion on Wednesday night.
DETERMINING FACTORS
FAU (10-12, 4-7 C-USA) had a lead until 8:17 of the fourth quarter, but Old Dominion made a late push to come back and win.
Malia Kency opened the game with a three 14 seconds in to give the Owls the first points of the contest. Sasha Cedeño followed her with a three of her own on the next possession. The Owls went on a 7-0 run midway through the quarter and ultimately built a 17-8 lead in the first quarter.
FAU outscored the Monarchs, 14-7, to open the second period but Old Dominion ended the frame on an 8-0 run to take a 31-23 score into halftime. The Owls were held to only nine points in the third quarter.
The Owls started the fourth quarter with a one-point lead. Old Dominion scored the first points of the period to take their first lead of the game, but FAU responded with a 6-0 run. The Monarchs answered with their own 5-0 run to tie the score, 46-46. From there, the game featured four lead changes and two ties. Ultimately, Old Dominion used an 8-0 run to build a late lead that proved to be the deciding factor.
OF NOTE
Raven Doyle led the Owls on the scoring front with a season-high 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting. She also had six rebounds in the game.
Sasha Cedeño was the only other Owl in double-digits with 12 points. With 997 career points, Cedeño moves into eighth place on FAU's all-time scoring list, passing Kim Hicks and Breanna Turner. She also had nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals.
Melinda Myers finished with four points and eight rebounds. She now moves into fourth place in FAU all-time rebounding with 544 rebounds. Alexis Cowan came into the game and made an impact, scoring three points and pulling down five boards.
UP NEXT
The Owls stay on the road to end the week. FAU will travel to rival FIU on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip time. Next week, the Owls will have their final home games of the 2017-18 season, hosting Southern Miss (Feb. 23) and FIU (Feb. 25). February 25 against FIU will be Senior Day for FAU's six seniors.
