BOCA RATON, Fla. -Â
The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team had three players named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-South Region team on Wednesday. Senior
Ivone Martinez and juniors
Massiel Matos and
Sigourney Kame each earned the recognition. It is the first time since 2005 that FAU has had someone make an All-Region team.
Â
Recently named Conference USA Setter of the Year, Martinez leads the nation in assists per set (12.51) for the second straight year. She had seven double-doubles on the season and 31 for her career. Her 1,264 assists this season was the second-best single season total in FAU history and she is second in program history with 3,466 career assists.
Â
"I'm really honored to be named to the All-Region team," said Martinez. "I'm extremely blessed to be a part of the FAU program and for having such amazing teammates and coaches who have pushed me to the best player and person I can be."
Â
Matos was named First Team All C-USA as an outside hitter prior to this regional honor. She led the team with 369 kills and kills per set at 3.65, which was good for seventh in the conference. She also had a team-high 19 double-digit kill matches and averaged 2.43 digs per set and won C-USA Offensive Player of the Week twice.
Â
"I'm very happy to make the All-Region team," Matos commented. "All of the hard work over the season has turned out positive results, which wouldn't have been possible without my coaches and my teammates. I can't wait until next year."
Â
Like Matos, fellow junior outside hitter Kame made the All C-USA First Team for the second season in a row and earns her first All-Region nod. Kame ended the season second on the team in kills (320) and kills per set (3.64), which is immediately behind Matos, at eighth place in C-USA.
Â
"I thank God for this privilege and I know that I could never have done it without my incredible coaches and teammates who have always supported and have helped me grow tremendously," said Kame.
Â
The All-Region teams were chosen by AVCA member coaches from each region, and all honorees are eligible for the AVCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Dec. 12. Every Division I All-Region team can be found
